Are ya'll going? I'm still in debate mode.
I was thinking about going for the Saturday part since I saw at one point it would be tribal and Sunday was folkloric.
The new schedule says only 1st part of Sat is tribal and 2nd part now folkloric and sunday a mix of both..
I love tribal but really don't care for folkloric enough to do a workshop on one..
Ack.. if it wasn't so much I'd do it anyways but at that cost I'd hate to go and not really enjoy all of it.
Anyone seen her actual stuff? All I've seen is the youtube vids, mostly looks cabaret to me.

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 5:49 AMYeah, I'm debating, too. I was planning to go when I first heard about it and then Tribal Pura came up which is so much better! And then there's also the last part of Joyce's workshop series that month. I don't know much about her either. I'm with you, I hate to pay the big bucks that workshops with "names" cost now, only to discover that you really don't like their style once you get there! -

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 6:13 AMYeah I am with Sonya on this. Still thinking about it. We get so few workshops in the area, in comparison to other cities, that I hate to skip one that might have appropriate learning material for me even to a small degree. I am having trouble viewing some of the info on Zuri's site on this workshop. I keep getting an Adobe error that shuts it down. It is news to me about the changes you mentioned, Denise. Roz has not posted that on this tribe so I have to go looking for it. I would like the folkloric class because I think that is useful background for tribal. But at first that part was just on Sunday and well, I am rarely able to go to a Sunday event, with church and band practice, unless it is super worth while for me. Like Tribal Pura!
Like Sonya said, there have been some disappointing workshops you pay dearly for and with things as they are in the financial aspect of life, one tends to be cautious anymore. You just can't help it! I know I have heard good things about Mira, though, so this one could be worth considering. -

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 9:20 PMHi, Ladies,
I'm Cheryl with Zuri who is sponsoring Mira Betz. She is becoming more and more well known and has now had to hire an agent. When we were researching who to bring in we picked Mira because of her diverse abilities. She is very knowledgeable about the dance we all love in all its forms. And we wanted someone who could "cross boundaries" so to speak so we would reach both our ATS/fusion dancers and Egyptian dancer. We will not host another workshop until 2010, so we hope you can make it. Mira came very highly recommended by Joyce in Bham (the dancing librarian..I think that is how she is known) and also by Ali with N.O.madic Tribal in NOLA. Apparently, we were turned on to her just as she was becoming more well know. Plus, Jim Boz also gave her a thumbs up.
Mira has put out a couple of DVD's for belly dancers by belly dancers. She's a very good dancer in both ATS/tribal fusion (since fusion grew out of ATS) and Egyptian folkloric.
This is a charity event in that we are donating a large portion of the proceeds this year to 15 Place a local homeless shelter where I have volunteered and which is run by a wonderul lady who is in our classes. Last year we donated to Penelope House (for abused women).
Please considered strongly coming to this event. It will be fun. AND, we are having some good vendors. Plus, Mira will be vending her wares as well.
If i was "dancing" I'd be there in a shot. But with my bad back I was told by Scott, our drummer, that he's going to make me into a "bad@* " drummer! lol!!! Can't wait for that one. I still teach so I'll be there, if not actually moving, then taking copious notes!
Please come!! I promise we'll have a blast!
Shimmies!

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Sat, February 9, 2008 - 2:13 PMYour welcome. AND, after getting a feel for what people want we are STRONGLY CONSIDERING (PER JANE & ZEE) to having Saturday be Tribal fusion only and Sunday be Egyptian folkloric only. How's that sound? Speak out!! (grins!) -

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Mon, February 18, 2008 - 2:28 PMPlease do not hesitate for one moment about attending ANY workshop by Mira Betz. She is one of the most beautiful and amazing dancers I have ever seen - plus she is an excellent teacher. I am planning to come to Mobile for this workshop and hope to bring some dance friends from B'ham with me. It does not matter if you study ATS, Tribal Fusion, Egyptian, etc. Mira has so much to learn and you HAVE to see her on stage!!!!

Tue, February 19, 2008 - 6:58 AMHi Helen! That is a pretty powerful testimony. Sounds like it would be a really good idea for us locals to go! We don't have to travel 5 hours like Helen.

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 7:54 AMWould you happen to know what the workshops are going to be on yet?
I didn't see any mention of a general idea of what was lined up...
I.e. Combo's, drills, layers, choreography etc etc
Looking around her tribe so far that I saw she does one on shimmies, arms , and dance as a business and how to do your advertising/promote yourself, etc etc. -

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 8:30 AMThat is a good question, Denise. Maybe Cheryl can help us out here. Cheryl? -

Wed, February 20, 2008 - 6:19 AMLadies,
I do not have the contract in front of me right now but will get it and post for you what Mira will be teaching. Will try to get that done today, it COULD be tomorrow as I'm having a discogram done on my back today.
Thanks! Will be in touch.

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Wed, February 20, 2008 - 8:40 AMI assume a discogram is looking at your vetebra but it rather sounds like something to do with nightclubing in the 70s. Hope your results are favorable.

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 7:08 AMWell seeing as this workshop in Mobile is next weekend, I was wondering who all decided to go? Sonya's not, but I am, on Saturday only, and not staying for the show. Denise? You going? Anyone else from around here? Just wondering.... I still don't know what she will be teaching which days but I sure am hoping for a bit of both on Saturday, since I can't make the second day. This concludes the rash of workshops we are attending for a while. We either have nothing going on, or a bunch of stuff back to back, around this area. -

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 7:16 AMJoyce, Laura and Susan are going for the weekend. We will there Friday around dinner time, but are not staying at the preferred hotel since they were sold out due to some tennis thing going on that weekend. however, our hotel is supposed to be a very short walk to the venue....
And aw shucks! Sonya's not going and Shawn's not staying for the show?? But Laura and I are doing a "Very Impressive Sword Dance"! I need smiling faces in the audience!!

Mon, April 21, 2008 - 7:16 AMI decided not to go .... Too much spending this month lol ( led hoop and birthday presents) and combined with not knowing exactly what she does I decided to pass on this one.
I heard that, it's tons at once or nada haha -

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 7:40 AMWell I guess I will have to tell you what there was then, or wait Joyce is way better at reporting...maybe she should do it! I will give my personal opinion. I hope to get something of interest from this since it is not cheap. Right now to me, though, it is going to be hard to top our weekend at the Tribal Pura workshops. Since flat out tribal is my thing, and not really fusion, I am on the picky and opinionated side.
And not doing the show, oh sorry Joyce and Laura!! You will have plenty of smiling friendly faces watching you though! I need to get on back to the farm and besides am attending in the company of my friend Becky who also needed to get back to Pcola, so it worked out well for us to go together. It is our last time to do a workshop together since it looks like she will be relocating to Hawaii in the near future, if all goes well.
Anyway, I hope we all have a fun weekend! Happy travels from Tally!

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 8:57 AMI've just been reminded about this workshop and I definitely want to attend. Does anyone know anyone in the Mobile area whose couch I could crash on? I am small, quiet, and love all animals.

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 9:32 AMI bet you will get several responses Ali. You are indeed small and quiet, and very sweet besides. You know where I am in relation to Mobile, if that suits your needs. If you don't get a better offer, consider this one.

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 11:10 AMhello ladies,
i wanted to chime in here, maybe too late maybe not. I understand about tight finances and the array of workshops available these days. and as i personally can not boast for my own workshops i will post a few testimonials from others who like my work.

Maria Hamer of Zafira dance company:
I wanted to just say AGAIN, what a real pleasure an honor it was to meet you and study under you. Your skill and artistry of this dance for is inspiring to me, and a breathe of fresh air. I am excited to get to work on new things....
Sharon Kihara, Bellydance Superstars-
"Mira Betz is my favorite dancer to watch right now. She has a rare maturity and emotional connection in her performances, well seasoned beyond her years. She manages to impart these qualities while maintaining a playful and theatrical value; this woman is a true professional, and has a really unique style that's hard to put a label on. I enjoy taking Mira's classes whenever I can, her teaching style is challenging yet accessible, with a very pleasing combination of expression, artistry, studied technique and strength. I feel freshly inspired every time I see her perform, she's a reminder to me of what made me fall in love with bellydance in the first place! If you have the good fortune to encounter her, either on stage or in a workshop, consider yourself quite fortunate; Mira has been a very well-kept secret, but it seems the cat's out of the bag"
hope you see you there.

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 12:11 PMMy opinion may not weigh as much as Sharon Kihara's or Olivia's, but I'll add that I find Mira to be the most innovative dancer on the scene right now. Wait, scratch that. Mira manages to combine innovation with technique, making her the most impressive dancer on the scene right now. She's pushing all the boundaries, forwarding the genre of bellydance, defying definition and making true art. How? She refuses to sacrifice technique, precision and beauty for the sake of creativity.
my two cents.
and I'll be there--life willing. I found a couch! Thanks, Alexis!!

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 2:51 PMWow, I can't recall seeing anywhere in any tribes I belong to a pending workshop getting so much attention and speculation..even to the point of the instructor joining in. I feel kind of honored, really. Mira, my friend Joyce, (Tribal Wallah), bragged on you - that's a Southern saying - and here too Ali has spoken up for you. I trust their judgement! Anyway, I am already signed up but it is pretty interesting to have so much dialog and these endorsements.

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 5:43 AMIt sounds like a good workshop, but I'm suffering from a bit of belly burnout right now. If it had been a month or two later, I'd probably be there. I'm just itching to work in my house and especially my yard before it gets hot as blazes! Every other weekend this spring I've been dancing or it's been raining!
Shawn will have to teach me what she learns! -
-
Re: Mira Betz workshop
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:23 PMI SO understand belly dance burnout. BUT MIRA BETZ RAKS! Totally enchanting performer...extremely knowledgeable, smart, talented, funny, beautiful. Workshop participants are remarking that they took away so much more than they ever thought they would.
I have never seen a dancer who was so totally enthralling. I have to rank her right up there with Suhaila, Aziza of Montreal, and others. -

Re: Mira Betz workshop
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 6:51 AMMira is pretty entertaining for sure, cute, and funny. I was only there on Saturday, so realize I did not get 'the rest of the story' as 2 day goers did. Sat morning was a good drilling workout and must have lead up to some fusion moves the next day, and the afternoon folkloric was quite fun. I am SO glad she did indeed do some of both 'subjects' on Saturday.
Zuri did a fine job organizing and decorating the place up nice. The lunches we pre-bought were good too!
